The local railway station is called Saline di Volterra. It is situated, however 10km away from the town. The railway station has limited connections. In fact, there are only five trains arriving daily from Cecina. The trip takes around 40 minutes. The train station at Cicena has very good connections to Rome and Pisa. Seventeen trains arrive daily from Rome and 26 from Pisa. Therefore, it is best if you get a train to Cecina and then a connecting bus to Volterra.

Volterra has fairly good bus connections. There is no direct bus from Siena. Daily, 16 buses (SITA) run from Siena to Colle di Val Esta, from where you can make a transfer on one of the five buses running to Volterra. The whole trip takes around 70-80 minutes. There are no direct buses from San Gimignano either. You need to first take a bus to Poggibonsi and then transfer at Colle di Val d'Esta. The whole trip takes approximately 70 minutes. The trip from Florence takes around 2 and a half hours and there are 2 direct buses to Volterra. The local bus station in Volterra is situated at Piazza Martiri della Liberta.

if you are arriving by car to Volterra from Florence take the autostrada Florence-Siena and then look for an exit for Colle di Val d'Elsa. Then take the SS68; Volterra is approximately 30km from the exit. Arriving from San Gimignano take the SS68, which goes through Castel di San Gimignano.

Getting around the city

The best way to explore Tuscany is by car. Charming small towns and road restaurants contribute to the area's appeal. However, if you decide to travel by public transport, better use bus, than train. The most popular rental car here is Fiat, however bear in mind that in most cases it is not automatic, so you need to indicate that demand in advance.
